Carpet Care FAQs
We are happy to answer any of your questions about carpet care, proper cleaning techniques, and information about our employees. If you don’t see what you need on this list, feel free to contact us.
How often should my carpet and upholstery be cleaned?
If carpet and upholstery is cleaned before it becomes too unsightly, the cleaning chore will be easier and more successful. Allowing them to become overly soiled will result in irreversible damage. It is a common myth that cleaning them before it is absolutely necessary will cause them to get dirty faster. Your cleaning frequency is dependent on a number of factors including your lifestyle, kids, pets, color choices, housekeeping, and your level of spot cleaning success, to name a few. A good rule of thumb is to clean all carpet traffic lanes and frequently used upholstery at least once per year. Some high use areas such as family rooms, dinettes, halls, steps and baths may require cleaning more often. Don’t hesitate to ask for our cleaning tech’s advice while he’s there.
Will providing carpet care with your Hot Water Extraction System make them re-soil quicker, shrink or mildew?
The rinsing action of the hot water extraction system leaves no residue to attract soil any faster than it did before cleaning. Proper training, techniques, products and equipment are your assurance that maximum soil removal will be accomplished with no such problems.
Does cleaning remove the original soil retardant protector from my carpet?
Your original protector is not removed by proper cleaning techniques. Over time, abrasion, caused by regular foot traffic and vacuuming, will remove some of the protector and lower its effectiveness. The soil retardant should be reapplied to the carpet after each cleaning. Learn more about Teflon Carpet Protection.
Do you guarantee to remove all the spots and stains?
We have great success with most spots. A spot is something foreign on the carpet or upholstery that can be removed. A stain is something we call a spot after we have exhausted all removal possibilities. It’s impossible to predict the outcome prior to cleaning so we cannot guarantee total stain removal. Learn about our Teflon Carpet Stain Protector.
Can I walk on my carpet right after it has been cleaned?
Yes, you can. We recommend you walk in socks and be careful not to slip as you walk from the damp carpet onto hard floors like vinyl, wood, or tile.
How long will it take to dry?
It varies between 6 and 24 hours for total drying. To speed things up, we use special “turbo dryer” fans. In cold weather, turn your heat up and ventilate the house somewhat with exhaust fans and some windows open slightly. You can open the whole house during hot, dry weather. Air conditioning helps during humid days. Blow air across the carpet with summer fans and ceiling fans. The ideal inside temperature is 72 or warmer, regardless of weather, for optimal carpet care. Will your equipment scratch my floors, walls or baseboards?
No. We take special care and precautions to make certain nothing is damaged while we’re in your home. Fine floors and white painted trim are no problem. We take great pride in our work.
Do you move furniture?
Yes, we can move and replace sofas, chairs, tables, and several other light items. Foam blocks and special foil tabs are used to elevate the furniture for proper drying and keep the legs from staining the carpet. We clean around kitchen appliances and large heavy furniture like pianos, china cabinets, entertainment centers, full bookcases, grandfather clocks, and desks. In bedrooms, we clean around beds and dressers because space is limited.
What do I need to do before Brothers Cleaning arrives?
You’ll need to move small items, knick-knacks, and breakables off the carpet and off any furniture you would like us to move. Or, you can move out what you want and have us clean the open areas around what is left to get the lowest cost.
How much will it cost?
Carpet care prices are based on the square footage of area cleaned and how much, if any, furniture you would like us to move. Upholstery cleaning is based on a scale of difficulty and estimated time. We can sometimes give you a rough idea over the phone with more information from you; however, we prefer to come out and look at your needs ahead of time. Written estimates are free – the cost won’t change unless you add or subtract services, and it gives you a chance to meet the person who will be doing your cleaning.
Do I have to be here the entire time that the cleaning takes place?
No. We’re licensed, bonded and insured. Many customers will meet with us and then leave when we’re ready to begin cleaning. When we’re finished, we’ll adjust the thermostat, windows and your fans for the quickest drying time, and lock ourselves out. If you’re a past customer or we’ve done an estimate for you, we can arrange for entry while you’re at work, and call you if we have any questions, if that is your preference. Is there such a thing as a janitorial company that cleans but doesn't have any problems?
The reality is, there is not a “perfect janitorial company.” Problems will inevitably occur, but the key question is, “how well does my janitorial service respond to these problems, and am I able to conveniently communicate these concerns to them?”
At Brothers, our Customer Service Manager, Fred May, is available 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday – Friday, by phone or email. If you have an “emergency,” we have people available to respond, any time day or night. If it is not an emergency, our staff will attend to the concern that night. Contact us now.
Does Brothers Cleaning run criminal backgrounds checks on all employees?
Yes. We use a professional criminal background company to check criminal history on all our employees before they are hired. Learn more.
There are a lot of illegal workers residing in Lane County, Oregon. How do I know the people cleaning my building are legal?
We made a decision long ago to only hire legal documented employees. Our Human Resource Manager uses the US Homeland Security web program “E-verify” to make sure every person we hire can legally work in the US. We take the time to make sure the documents presented to us are in fact bonafide. In addition to verifying our employees’ right to legally work, we conduct a background check on each and every potential employee before hiring them and placing them at one of our accounts. “Had my carpet cleaned this morning with Jeremy at the wheel for Brothers. He arrived on time, was very professional and fast. It only took 45 minutes to check in, set up, clean, pack and leave. My carpet was like night and day! I knew it was bad but didn’t realize how gross it had gotten. Usually get my carpet cleaned annually, now I know who to call next time!”
